The best way for both families to get to know each other before the wedding is at the engagement party.  In our family, it is tradition for the brides family to throw a little gathering for the engagement party.  We invite the close relatives on both sides so  we can all meet.  Usually we just serve some appetizers and have a few games to get to know the families.

That is a nice tradition, antkmom. A get-to-know-each-other affair before the wedding. It should get both families closer.

That's very interesting. I don't know if we have that tradition but usually, the groom's family would held that kind of party. Are the friends of both parties invited in the ocassion or this is exclusively for the family?
