Wedding budgets can be anywhere from $1000 to tens of thousands of dollars. It all depends on what you are having.
Yes, it is fine to have the ceremony in one location and the reception in another.
Do you want 'The Works' or 'Short & Sweet' ? Most of the weddings I've worked with had budgets from $12,000 up to $27,000. These budgets included everything from the Save The Date cards to the Get Away Limo. And, these are not over-the-top weddings.
They were traditional and elegant. The main expenses were for facility fees, food, attire, & accomodations.
We're working within a budget of about $10,000, and that's for a wedding, reception, larger receiption / party and honeymoon. However, we are planning a smaller wedding of about 25 people, followed by a small reception. Then we're going to have a larger reception a couple of days later - more of a party, really!
So yes, in answer to your question - it is totally ok to do what you want. It's your wedding! However, I would be mindful of the distance that people need to drive and the time you leave them to get there. It's a pain to have to drive way across the city between the wedding and the reception!
