We have picked a date (May 30, 2010) but do not have a location. Would it be totally crazy to send the STDs without a venue set in stone? I have two ideas for locations, but they are about 40 minutes away from each other, so I though about saying Sacramento, so people would know it would be near home, or Northern Ca so to keep the option open for either place. I would like to send the STDs as soon as possible due to the fact it is a holiday weekend, to make sure people have plenty of time to plan.

You have a point, it being a holiday weekend you want your guests to save the date.  The save the date's I have gotten didnt have the wedding location on them.  It was just the bride and grooms name and the date to save.
If you are definite that is the date, go ahead and send them out.

Right, you don't have to put a location on your save the date.  Just send out a save the date with your photos on them and the date and time. I would think that would be good enough.  If it's a holiday weekend you really want to get them out there early.
Congrats on your upcoming wedding!
